Sedona Arizona Drive

The annual rental car spring migration from winter havens Florida and Arizona to elsewhere in the country is about to begin but renters can take advantage of promotional offers by booking now. We've already posted about the two declared offers from sister companies Alamo and Enterprise, plus Budget's response, to get vehicles out of Florida (Hertz Global Holdings -- Dollar, Hertz, and Thrifty -- have no "published" offer but frequently have similar rates). Florida's the big opportunity; many more rentals get relocated to Florida for the winter snowbird and tourist seasons and drive-out rates in the spring are thus cheaper (more cars to move). There's also a lesser migration of rental cars out of Arizona to not Arizona; Budget and Enterprise have competing (but not too competitive) offers to incentive renters to drive a few cars one-way from that state -- it cheaper than having a professional car transporter do so! Budget's offer has strength in more vehicle types, while Enterprise's offer has more eligible pickup cities, a great number of destinations, and some exceptions where far lower rates are available!

Budget's Arizona Drive-Out Offer

We mentioned Budget's Arizona drive-out offer in the post primarily dedicated to that company's Florida offer. The Arizona offer -- by itself -- was nothing to write home (or a blog post) about but now that a competitor has thrown out an offer, there's a method of judging relative merit. Budget's offer -- while starting at a lower price point -- has fewer positive aspects, even for one-way rentals that are frequently very expensive:

  • Positive: Budget's offer applies to all vehicle types except full-size SUVs and full-size vans.
  • Positive: There are no additional one-way (drop) fees as part of the promotion, as long as the renter books before the company pulls the offer.
  • Negative: Budget's promotion is limited to pickups in Phoenix only.
  • Negative: The furthest east a vehicle can be returned is Albuquerque, New Mexico.
  • Neither Positive nor Negative: A renter can keep the vehicle for up to 14 days on a leisurely drive.

Enterprise Arizona Drive-Out Offer

The Enterprise drive-out offer has a few more customer-friendly aspects but their promotion's downfall is big; the eligible cars are all small!

  • Positive: Enterprise has one price ($29.99 per day before taxes and fees) to drive a car one-way from Arizona.
  • Positive: There are no additional one-way (drop) fees as part of the promotion, as long as the renter books before the company pulls the offer.
  • Positive: Enterprise allows more pickup locations than simply Phoenix, allowing rentals from Phoenix, Mesa, Peoria, Scottsdale, Tempe, Chandler, Gilbert, Glendale, Casa Grande and Tucson
  • Positive: A renter can keep the vehicle for up to 21 days.
  • Positive: Enterprise allows renters to drive east under their offer (just not to Florida).
  • Negative: There are only five eligible vehicle sizes -- economy, compact, intermediate and standard cars plus intermediate SUVs. No minivans to relocate that studio apartment or college dorm room!

Reminder to Enterprise: You're trying to induce people to leave Arizona with your imagery.

There May be Prices Lower than the "Advertised" Rate

It sounds counterintuitive but the rental car companies frequently publish "promotional rates" on one-way rentals and then undercut their own published offers when the company really, truly needs to get vehicles from one point to another. While Enterprise's official promotion starts at $29.99 per day (before taxes and fees) out of Arizona, a renter who has the need to travel from Phoenix to Nashville could score rates under $10 per day (before taxes and fees).

Less than $10 per day Phoenix to Nashville? Those are unbeatable rates!

The takeaway is simple -- if a renter needs to take a one-way rental from Arizona to elsewhere in the United States between March 24 and May 31, the key is to book a reservation quickly. Once each rental car company projects enough vehicles will be moved out of Arizona, the marketing teams pull the offers and rates for one-way rentals revert to their previous, non-discounted levels. A traveler can request quotes from the bottom of this webpage; promotions will automatically be reflected in the quotes received if the rental car companies deem the requested rental eligible!
