Marathon MakeItCount loyalty program

Marathon Gas Stations recently changed up its MakeItCount loyalty program, which is a snap to join and offers you the choice of earning Marathon's CentsOff fuel points, Southwest Rapid Rewards miles, Wyndham Returns hotel reward points or gift cards at Target, Petco or Domino's.

At the end of every car rental, there's always one stop right before return. You should always be thinking of how to minimize the cost of your fuel, since prepaying for a tank of fuel is never a good deal for the renter, and returning with less than a full tank is an even worse decision.

Where to Find Marathon Gas Stations

There are approximately 5,500 Marathon locations in 20 U.S. states and the District of Columbia, sweeping from Florida through the Southeast and up to western New York and into Minnesota.

At this time, however, not every Marathon location is participating in the MakeItCount program, though thousands are. Be sure to check for participating locations.

How Marathon's MakeItCount Loyalty Program Works

For starters, Marathon's MakeItCount chops 20 cents off each gallon on the first fill-up up to 20 gallons. Then it lets you choose among multiple reward options, which can be changed at any time:

Marathon's My CentsOff

My CentsOff is a loyalty program where members can earn points at thousands of participating Marathon gas stations. Members earn 20 points for every gallon of fuel purchased, plus earn additional points on select in-store purchases. My CentsOff members can also redeem points for CentsOff fuel discounts.

Southwest Rapid Rewards

Southwest Rapid Rewards members can earn points at Marathon gas stations. Members earn one point for every gallon of fuel purchased, plus earn additional points on select in-store purchases.

Wyndham Returns

Wyndham Rewards members can now earn points at thousands of participating Marathon gas stations, including two points for every gallon of fuel purchased and additional points on select in-store purchases. Members can also redeem their points for CentsOff fuel discounts.

Target eGift Cards

Members who choose Target eGift Cards as their preferred program earn 20 points for every gallon of fuel purchased, plus earn additional points on select in-store purchases or other specified achievements at thousands of participating Marathon gas stations. Target eGiftCards can be used at Target stores and Target online.

Petco eGift Cards can be used at Petco stores and Petco online.

Domino's eGift Cards

Members who choose Domino's eGift Cards as their preferred program earn 20 points for every gallon of fuel purchased, plus earn additional points on select in-store purchases or other specified achievements at thousands of participating Marathon gas stations.

How to Maximize Marathon's MakeItCount Benefits

Marathon often offers an option to purchase gift cards with embedded fuel discounts, so consider opting for the Southwest Rapid Rewards benefit. Southwest points eventually expire just like the benefits awarded by a rental car company, but you can keep your points from expiring simply by stopping at Marathon once every two years. (Similarly, intermittent stops at BP using the Driver Rewards program extends the usage of United Airlines miles.) These programs provide a relatively small benefit, but any price cut on a fuel purchase is a good idea.
