One of the most frequent questions we get asked at AutoSlash is whether there's any way to get additional driver fees waived, the topic of one of our most popular blog posts. The answer is often yes if rentals originate in the United States or Canada. The organizations responsible for most of those U.S. and Canadian waivers -- AAA, AARP, and USAA -- even have "American" or "United States" in their names! Outside the U.S. and Canada, finding fee waivers for an additional driver is exceptionally rare! In the rest of the world, there are practically no exceptions from the rental car companies on additional driver fee waivers.

However, sister companies Dollar and Thrifty -- who don't even exempt spouses as additional drivers in the U.S. -- have introduced a limited time offer that could help visitors to resort areas in Mexico. And by "resort areas" we mean resort areas -- Cancun Airport (CUN), San Jose del Cabo Airport (SJD), and Puerto Vallarta Airport (PVD). Reservations booked under the code 101236 (whether with Dollar or Thrifty) allow one additional driver for free from now until June 30, 2018.

The promotion is valid for every car category but subject to blackouts by Dollar and Thrifty.

Just like any other promotion, the rental car company throws out a lot of rules for the offer. The simple key is that the reservation has to be booked under the code 101236, eliminating any other possible discount (Dollar and Thrifty rentals can only have a single offer code). While rates under this promotion are likely to be a little higher than the best possible discounted rate, avoiding the additional driver fee (when an additional driver is truly necessary) could create value for many renters.

Can AutoSlash find quotes under code 101236? Of course we can! We would just modify a traveler's existing quote request to find the best possible rates that include one additional driver. And while we might be able to help tourists avoid the additional driver fee at these resort areas, we can't help with other rental car company policies (like minimum requirements for drivers) or the Mexican legal requirement of drivers to have a proper liability policy purchased in Mexico.
