Escape Lounge

All of the AutoSlash team members are frequent travelers -- one of our team members spends more days on the road than at home! Frequent travel means frequent stay at airports, with terminals in various states of (dis)repair, sporadic access to power outlets, and inflated food prices or a trip to the nearest airline lounge. Some of our team members individually justify inflated credit card annual fees out our own budgets to get access to these airline lounges. Returning home from our experiment with a Jucy USA camper van, I had multiple hours to burn at Oakland International Airport. And through the American Express Global Lounge Collection, I had access to the Escape Lounge in Terminal 1. So how do rental cars come into play?

National Partnership with Escape Lounges

Don't have access to Escape lounges through a credit card but planning on visiting anyway? National is offering a promotion for $10 off the purchase of passes for the Escape lounges in Hartford, CT (BDL), Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN (MSP) and Oakland, CA (OAK). It's not an exceptional deal -- the Escape lounges offer a $5 discount just by booking in advance through their own website. Yet the National tie-in provides an additional $5 off a basic airport lounge experience for a few dollars less than otherwise available.

If it's worth paying for, it's worth saving $10 on.

The Escape lounges are never going to be confused for first-class lounges or American Express Centurion Lounges -- in fact, the Oakland Lounge is currently pulling down a 2.5 score (10 ratings) on Trip Advisor. Yet on my midday visit (before the late-afternoon international flights), I had hours of serviceable food, adult beverages, power outlet, comfortable seat, and a view of airport operations. The complimentary food and beverage included during my visit kept money in my pocket and I had a great setting to start that Jucy campervan blog post.

Prosciutto, mac and cheese ramekin, salad, mushrooms, and asparagus are healthier options than I would find in the terminal.

The offer from National is not the most lucrative for travelers but if a long stay in any of these three airports is projected, there just might be enough value for travelers without access to a lounge to consider.
