Rental car companies have long sought to introduce innovative ways to help make transactions easy for customers. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, one of Avis' selling points was that they accepted many major credit cards. So we know what you're probably thinking ...there aren't too many credit cards today, primarily American Express, Diner's Club, Discover, MasterCard, and Visa. Five decades ago, Avis was offering consumers the option of using any of 27 credit cards, in the era when companies had to take card imprints and then mail off documents for every transaction! No wonder the original Diner's Club card carried a 7% transaction fee to retailers.
This is an impressive haul of credit cards in the pre-churning era and includes an Avis Charge Card.

Yet this commercial is a wonderful gateway to a massive internet rabbit hole for travelers who also have a penchant for all-around geekery -- the history of credit cards. And while we're digging into a subject other than rental cars, at least we can rock out to Avis' tagline ...
