As college football dominates the sports landscape at the end of the calendar year, we reflect upon the days when bowl games had tortured names due to sponsorships.
Well, those days never really left – for example, the former Humanitarian Bowl is now the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. ESPN recenly signed a sponsor that gave us the Cheribundi Tart Cherry Boca Raton Bowl.
Much of the AutoSlash team still refers to the current WalkOn's Bistreaux & Bar Independence Bowl using the name of a long-expired sponsor, the Poulan/Weed Eater Independence Bowl. We have to admit that some marketing executives in the early/mid-1990s (1991-1997) did exceptional work for us to make that connection decades later!
However, some marketing executives from the same timeframe did truly horrendous work in their naming and sponsorship of bowl games. How many of us truly remember the Thrifty Car Rental Holiday Bowl Presented by Chrysler* of the same era (1991-1994)?
* Chrysler owned Thrifty at the time, hence the dual-title.
